The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 11,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

The Social Work internship program is an exciting learning and field experience for MSW of LMHC students who wish to gain additional experience working in a front line youth development agency. Students will be providing direct practice services to an at-risk adolescent population, within the areas of case management, supportive and group counseling, crisis intervention, and community building. There is the expectation that social work interns will function in various capacities providing ongoing treatment, intake and assessments, treatment and discharge planning and case record management activities. Social work interns in the Counseling Center and Homeless and Runaway Youth programs are provided with group work experience and case conferencing. Individual clinical and group supervision are provided.

Responsibilities:
Perform individual case management with homeless youth such as housing packets, completing intakes and psychosocials.

Provide and assist with shelter referrals.

Assist with public benefits.

Connecting youth to needed support services such as mental health treatment, drug treatment, health care, vocational training, schools, etc.

Providing supportive counseling and crisis counseling to walk-in clients.

Provide basic needs services such as showers, laundry, clothing, and overseeing lunch time programming.

Other duties assigned by supervisor

Qualifications:
Current student working towards Bachelor’s or Masters

Knowledge of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people

Good communication skills

Ability to act independently and work without supervision

Working towards LMSW or LCSW

Hours: Must be committed to working 28-35 hours per week from May-August. Hours are Monday-Friday 11:00am-7:00pm.

Salary: Unpaid. Internship can be used towards LMSW or LCSW hours or school credit. Please discuss with school regarding internship credits.
