The Conservation Fund

The Texas Office seeks an intern to prepare a history of establishment of the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge. This intern will gather and synthesize information addressing the reasons for and process of establishing the Refuge. Information will be collected through interviews, files, newspaper articles and papers written about the Refuge’s beginnings. The end product will be a publishable article summarizing the biological importance of the Refuge, the Refuge designation and resulting court case, documentation of the first 7,000 acres included in the Refuge and the beginnings of the Friends group.

Intern will gain knowledge of the federal government’s process of establishing national wildlife refuges, advocacy and grass roots initiatives, legislative processes and the role of non-profit organizations in facilitating implementation of governmental and public objectives.

The Conservation Fund will provide a stipend reimbursed bi-monthly, travel expenses and office space in the Austin TX office.

Intern will research written material, conduct interviews via phone and face to face, synthesize information into a written document detailing the history of the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge.

Intern shall have demonstrated writing ability and possess a strong interest in the subject matter. Intern should be working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in a field related to natural resources or public policy.

Some travel will be involved. Thus, a driver’s license and/or access to adequate transportation is required. A laptop will be required with access to Microsoft Office or Google Docs. Intern must speak English and be able to communicate via telephone.
